Starting in the early 1800s, LeBreton Flats was a bustling mixture of industrial and residential land use, supported by the nearby Chàudiere Falls. From foundaries, to rail yards, to tanneries, the industries supported Ottawa's growth and the workers who lived nearby, but left behind a legacy of contaminated soil and groundwater. When the Flats were razed by the federal government in the early sixties, it must have seemed improbable that it would be another 40 years before the residents returned. The redevelopment of LeBreton Flats is now underway, however, thanks in part to the Remedial Action Plan prepared by Intera. This comprehensive plan, which included historical review, site characterization, establishment of remedial targets, and preliminary feasibility and remediation studies laid the groundwork for future site-specific remediation and risk assessment work. Intera has and continues to play a critical role in assisting the NCC with the redevelopment of this valuable property.
