For a project of almost any kind to move from the planning to implementation, the proponent must navigate through the regulatory maze. From planning approval, to zoning changes, to license application under specific acts, to application for permits necessary for construction, this process can be complicated, time consuming, and costly. For all the headaches, however, regulation is critical to the functioning of our modern society, and encourages sustainable development.
Intera understands that while acts, regulations, and by-laws are generic in nature, when it comes to the approval process, their implementation is site specific. The proponent, the jurisdiction, the size and nature of the project, the neighbours, and even the politics can all affect the approvals process to some degree, meaning that the approach to the approvals process must be customized for each project. Intera’s approach is to maintain a template for studies in support of approvals that can be tailored to achieve the desired goal (permit, approval, etc.) in as cost-effective manner as possible.
While Intera has experience dealing with many of the municipal, provincial, and federal regulatory agencies, there are a select few who dominate. These include, the City of Ottawa, The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Our Ottawa location assists our clients in navigating the federal approvals process. In particular, our long history of dealing with the CNSC and its predecessor the Atomic Energy Control Board, provides our clients in the radioactive waste management arena with valuable insight into the regulatory process.
