Environmental risk assessment is the process of evaluating the risks to human health and ecological health posed by existing or proposed site conditions or facilities. Typically, risk assessment requires the characterization of contaminant sources, modeling of exposure pathways, assessment of exposure, and quantification of health risk or hazard to sensitive human and ecological receptors. Risk assessments can be qualitative or quantitative in nature, and completed at both screening and comprehensive levels, depending upon the needs of the assessment.
Risk assessment is now recognized as an integral part of the management and remediation of contaminated sites. Risk assessment can be combined with more traditional site remediation methods to provide cost-effective and rational cleanup and risk management strategies for clients with contaminated sites.
Intera’s scientific and engineering staff have directed multi-disciplinary risk assessment teams and completed risk assessments of contaminated sites and proposed facilities for over 20 years. Our background and expertise in modeling and quantitative assessment of contaminant migration and fate provide a strong foundation and regulatory agency confidence in our exposure and risk assessments. We have assisted a federal regulatory agency in evaluating and recommending multi-media exposure assessment models for use in human health risk assessments.
We have completed a variety of risk assessments under both federal and provincial regulatory guidance. Our risk assessment experience includes:
