Site Remediation
In most cases contaminated sites must be cleaned up, or at a minimum, the contamination must be managed to ensure the protection of human health and the environment. Many site remediation approaches and technologies are available and range from on-site and in‑situ approaches to removal for subsequent off-site treatment or disposal.
Selecting the most appropriate and cost-effective method to clean up a contaminated site requires a comprehensive understanding of site soil and groundwater conditions, characteristics of contaminants, regulatory requirements, performance capabilities of cleanup technologies, and client needs. Equally important in selecting the most appropriate remediation approach is consideration for the proposed future use and development schedule for the site.
Intera has designed cleanup strategies and implemented site cleanups to meet client needs using the following technologies:
- Excavation and disposal
- In-situ chemical oxidation
- Groundwater and product extraction and treatment
- Ex-situ and in-situ bioremediation
- Soil vapour and multi-phase extraction
- Surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation
- Bioventing and air sparging
- Risk assessment and risk management
Intera has applied its remediation experience on a broad range of projects, including:
- Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination from leaking underground storage tanks (USTs) and spills at gas stations, bulk fuel plants and industrial, commercial and residential properties.
- Chlorinated solvent, creosote, coal tar, PCB and radionuclide contamination at commercial, industrial, and residential sites.
- Metal contamination at current and historic commercial and industrial (brownfields) sites.
Intera has been particularly successful in implementing site cleanups using a turnkey project approach, providing superior project management and control for clients. Other remediation-related projects undertaken by Intera include:
- Removal of underground storage tanks from various commercial, industrial and residential properties.
- Design and assessment of bench-scale and pilot-scale treatability studies and field-scale demonstrations to assess innovative technologies for the treatment of contaminated soil and groundwater.
- Demonstration of natural intrinsic remediation, a low-cost alternative to traditional remediation methods for petroleum hydrocarbon and chlorinated solvent contamination.
